Julie Winokur: President and Executive Director
Writer Julie Winokur's stories have appeared in the The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Magazine, Salon, Natural History, Audubon, Travel & Leisure, Publisher's Weekly, Culturefront, the Sunday magazines of the Seattle Times and the San Jose Mercury News, and many others. She is the writer and project director for Aging in America: The Years Ahead, a seven-year multi-media look on the impact of aging on society. This series has been widely published and won top awards from the National Press Club, the American Society on Aging, and the National Press Photographers Association. The book for Aging in America was published by powerHouse in Fall 2003, at which time Winokur's documentary film on the project was released. Her previous book, We the Media: A Citizen's Guide to Fighting for Media Democracy (New Press), looked at the corporate influence over media content. She was also managing editor of Inside the L.A. Riots (Institue for Alternative Journalism), a book that examines the roots of racial conflict in Los Angeles. Her work has been supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Open Society Institute, and the California Endowment.
Caroline Herter: Vice President and Treasurer
Caroline Herter's career in publishing spans 25 years, including her roles as publishing director of Chronicle Books, vice-president / director of illustrated book publishing at Simon & Schuster, vice-president / director of national accounts for Scribners / Atheneum, and trade sales representative for Harper Collins. She is currently president of Herter Studio, an independent publishing studio that conceptualizes, develops, and represents individual projects and whole programs. As such, Herter consults, agents, and packages book projects, and does product development and brand extension for select clients. Her clients include 4-H, National Geographic, Chronicle Books, Stanford University, MGM, Abrams, Pottery Barn / Weldon Owen, Andrews McMeel Publishing, Turner Movie Classics, Jeff Bridges, Simple Abundance, Inc., Simon & Schuster, Stewart, Tabori, & Chang, and TenSpeed Press.
Don Hazen: Board Member
Don Hazen is Executive Director of the Independent Media Institute and Executive Editor of AlterNet. The former publisher of Mother Jones magazine, he has edited several books, including most recently, After 9/11: Solutions for a Saner World. Don conceived of and organized the two Media & Democracy Congresses that took place in San Francisco and New York City in 1997 and 1998, and has managed political campaigns in New York City for Ruth Messinger and David Dinkins. He holds an MA in counseling from the University of Massachusetts and a BA in politics from Princeton University.
Ed Kashi: Board Member
Photographer Ed Kashi's stories appear regularly in National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, Time, The Atlantic Monthly, Fortune, Geo, Newsweek, LIFE, Smithsonian, U.S. News & World Report, MSNBC.com, and many other domestic and international publications. He has published two books, The Protestants: No Surrender, concerning the troubles in Northern Ireland, and When the Borders Bleed: The Struggle of the Kurds (Pantheon). His last book Aging in America: The Years Ahead was published by powerHouse in Fall 2003. This body of work has garnered Kashi awards from the National Press Club, the National Press Photographers Association, the World Press, and Pictures of the Year. In addition to those awards, he has received awards from such institutions as the World Affairs Council and the NEA. His work has been supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Open Society Institute, and the California Endowment.
Lynn Luckow: Board Member Following a distinguished career as
head of Jossey-Bass Publishers, Lynn Luckow completed a two year assignment as president and CEO of Northern California Grantmakers, one
of the nation's most influential and diverse associations of philanthropic organizations and individuals. In partnership with the members,
he led NCG's repositioning by aligning its vision and priorities, broadening the membership, expanding and deepening programs, extending the
reach in family foundations, and launching a public policy agenda. As President and CEO of Jossey-Bass Publishers for nearly a decade, Mr.
Luckow was the lead innovator and architect in the company's reinvention. During his tenure, Jossey-Bass achieved growth at twice the industry
average, annual net revenues increased from $3 million to $40 million, the company built a premier brand identity, and attracted the best
thinkers in its fields. Honored in 2000 as the nation's top nonprofit board chairman by the National Assembly of Health and Human Service
Organizations, Mr. Luckow was recognized with its Excellence in National Board Leadership Award.
Andrew Ross: Board Member
Andrew Ross's distinguished career in publishing includes his role as co-founder, managing editor, and subsequently Executive Vice President in charge of business development, strategic alliances, and mergers and acquisitions of Salon Magazine, the online journal that has been recognized as one of the major voices in contemporary journalism. Ross is currently the Executive Foreign & National Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, supervising all foreign and national news that appears in the paper. He is also a member of the Chronicle's senior editorial management team. Ross has held a number of senior editorial positions at the Hearst Corporation's San Francisco Examiner and won several Society of Newspaper Design Awards. Prior to that, he was News Director at KQED-TV where he was awarded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting prize for producing the best public television news show of the year. Ross was Assignment Editor at KPIX-TV, has reported and produced for National Public Radio, and has written stories that appeared in The Guardian, The Times, and The Observer of London, as well as magazines including Good Housekeeping and Redbook.
